This offering is for a rare carved ox horn cup. The cup dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and is carved from one piece of horn with a tin trim on the bottom edge and a small hanging loop. The cup features a beautifully carved name of “ALVARO RIPLADA” surrounded by carved foliates and scrolls. The length is app. 5 not counting the hanging loop and it measures app. 3.5 wide, the depth is app. The condition is as seen in our photo’s. There three small cracks in the more pointed end and a longer crack in the rounded end which measures app. Otherwise the cup displays great with a wonderful patina and an untouched surface. Rare to find Goffering Iron. Goffering / Tally irons were used in making and preparing the ruffles and fluting in clothing from centuries passed. The iron would be heated in a fire, wiped clean, and then held in the iron tube. These tools were used in the 1600’s and into the 1800’s. This rare three legged form with beaded body and finale design dates back to late 1700s to early 1800s. It would be a great addition to any collector of wrought iron or period piece items. It is in great condition with amazing metal patina. Complete with the iron. Sits firm, no wobbles. Will measure about 13″ x 12″ with iregular shape.

It is decorated with a rubbed planished design. It has a question mark style handle which has turned over sides. The base as also been turned over. Shallow dents around the base and neck opening which do not detract but mentioned for accuracy and which I have tried to show in the photos. Charming and finely painted small scene titled on the reverse “La Conviction”, executed in oil on copper in the early 19th century. A delicate and expressive composition, characteristic of the Louis XVI – Directoire style. The artwork remains in good overall condition, with a very small loss to the dress decoration, barely visible and stabilized. The piece is housed in its original light wood frame, with an old annotation on the back that is still to be deciphered. A refined and collectible miniature with strong decorative appeal. Period: Early 19th century. Style: Louis XVI – Directoire. Material: Oil on copper, wooden frame. Frame size: 14 x 14 cm approx. 5.51 x 5.51 in. Painting diameter: 8 cm approx.
