ROCKAWAY ANTIQUE STEEL ROLLERSKATES Speed Skates Foot Cycle Rare Early 1900s
Posted by admin On June 14, 2018
Rockaway Foot Cycles / Antique Roller Skates by Rockaway Coaster Co. Unsure the date on the age of these, as they are extremely rare & hard to find any information about whatsoever. We found two magazines which mention the skates or the company. McClure’s Magazine Vol. 32’XXXII’ issued Nov. 1908 (advertisement shown in pictures). Toys & Novelties, Vol. 9 issued June, 1913. This magazine states that the Rockaway Coaster Co. No longer exists under that name & instead just go by’Rockaway’ which leads us to believe this pair of skates was produced before that date. These are the only pair of these skates you will find anywhere. The skates are still in great condition, of course there is age to the item, however nothing seems flawed. All 4 wheels spin freely, and the pieces seem put together very well. Very sturdy item, seems as if you could strap them on and take off skating. The last picture shows a small split in one of the spokes, though the wheel is still sturdy, and those pieces seem as if they’d be impossible to separate. The integrity of the wheel is not lost whatsoever. Steel frame, semi-steel wheels 4.5, roller bearings, adjustable front foot plate. 21″ x 3.75″ x 4.5 tall (each skate). Each skate weighs 3.5lbs. Rare Antique Early 1900’s Portrait Oil On Canvas Painting FORBES
Posted by admin On June 13, 2018
Portrait of a Lady In Wide Brimmed Hat Besides A Window. A rare study of a lady in white attire, floral wide brimmed hat and foliage to the left section of the painting. Overall a charming study. Inscribed with the artists name to the reverse of the canvas. The painting is housed in a good frame which compliments the painting well. About Stanhope Alexander Forbes. Forbes was born in Dublin, the son of Juliette de Guise Forbes, a French woman, and William Forbes, an English railway manager, who was later transferred to London. He had an older brother named William, who, like his father, was a railway manager; William worked for the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway. He was married in the summer of 1889 to fellow painter Elizabeth Armstrong at Newlyn’s St Peter’s Church. Their first home was at the “Cliffs Castle” cottage, which overlooked the sea. They had a son named Alexander, nicknamed Alec. The couple had a home built for the family in Higher Faughan, Penzance. Elizabeth died in 1912. In 1915, Forbes remarried friend and previous student Maudie Palmer, who had been assistant, helper and friend to the whole Forbes family. During the First World War Forbes’ son Alec served under the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Alec died on the battlefield in August, 1916. Forbes died in Newlyn on 2 March 1947 at the age of 89. He was buried in the churchyard of Sancreed Parish Church. Modern frame is in good condition as well. Framed: W: 55 cm (21 1/2″) x H: 67 cm (26 1/2″) approx. Extremely Rare Late 17th Early 18th Century Z Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass
Posted by admin On June 11, 2018
Extremely Rare Late 17th Early 18th Century Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass!!!! I say amaZingly because it is one of the most advanced designs of compasses for its time that I have come across! The needle is half white steel and half blackened steel, the white portion points North perhaps since Europeans are generally speaking white at that time, while the South is blackened since the south is primarily inhabited by darker folks, regardless the two different colors make it much easier and thus faster to differentiate between North and South, and the shape of the needle makes it much easier to follow even by someone with poor eye sight, extremely intelligent. Most likely created for the Dutch East India or Dutch West India Company, which could not function with-out such devices, the GPS of its time. It is the only compass I have eVer seen with a Z for south (Zuiden), which clearly and definitively indicate the compass is Dutch. The measurements of the wooden case are approximately 10.2 cm x 9.35 cm x 3.55 cm (4″ x 3 10.8/16″ x 1 6.5/16). The brass ring surrounding the compass is approximately 8.75 cm (3 7/16) in diameter. On the brass portion, the decorations, lines, and arabic numerals were all hand engraved by one of the worlds unknown but best compass makers I have eVer encountered. I have seen a Dutch? Compass, I inserted a question mark because the South was an S and not a Z, and of what I deem of much lesser quality fetch a sum of approximately 55 thousand USDs! So price-wise this beauty is a gift! The wooden case box is partially cracked on both sides, the crystal glass has some scratche s as can be observed on the upper right quadrant of the second image and the upper left quadrant of the 5th image , and some points of oxidation (darker colored areas), but remains a fully functional and beautiful compass worthy of any museum! A great addition to any museum quality marine or scientific collection! Definitely a gift for any high level intellectual mind! Please feel free to check out my other Museum Quality Collection! For the year of our Lord 2015 I wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
