A large deep bowl featuring a plain exterior and an unusual tripodal feature alongside a foot. The interior is beautifully coloured and decorated around a central bust of a youth amongst foliage. The rim decorated with cartouches of a fish scale motif and possibly calligraphy. This is 17th Century and shows its age so please check the photos carefully. This has been heavily damaged and shows large cracks, repairs and restorations including recolouring and filling in (not the best restorations in my opinion). Also included are chips to the rim and glaze, scratches, crazing and wear, and discolourations. The paint work isn’t crisp, the edges have bled. I also have a second very similar bowl in another listing. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian/Oriental Antiques\Islamic/Middle Eastern”. Rare Antique Persian Bedouin Islamic Astrolabe Circa Early 1700s
Offered for sale is this outstanding antique original brass Persian Islamic Bedouin Astrolabe, being 5 1/2 in diameter, signed by the maker, with Arabic and Zodiac engraving all over the front and back of this instrument. We believe the circa to be early 17th centaury. This old astrolabe is guaranteed to be an authentic antique. Astrolabes are dated at 570 AD to coincide with the birth of Mohamad which was 570 AD. This astrolabe is guaranteed to be an authentic antique. Alert: Please be aware that many of the scientific instruments offered for sale are reproductions made by India for export. This instrument is a genuine antique! Historically, each Bedouin Tribe Master had one of these astrolabes to help him navigate either on land (at night) or in water. The tribe master looked up at the stars for the big dipper. After finding the big dipper, he followed the handle which pointed to the north star. Having found the north star, he then knew which way was north. He always used the instrument at night because it was too hot during the day, and the big dipper and the north star was not visible during daylight hours. The Persian Astrolabe is a historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers and astrologers. Brass astrolabes were developed in much of the eastern world, chiefly as an aid to navigation and as a way of finding the qibla, the direction of Mecca. In the Islamic world, astrolabes were used to find the times of sunrise and the rising of fixed stars, to help schedule morning prayers. It was the chief navigational instrument until the invention of the compass and sextant. Its many uses included locating and predicting the positions of the sun, moon, planets and stars; determining local time given the local longitude and vice-versa; surveying, and triangulation. Astrologers of European nations used astrolabes to construct horoscopes. In the Islamic world, they are and were used primarily for astronomical studies, though astrology was often involved there as well. The astrolabe was introduced to the Islamic world the mid-eighth century. The astrolabe was fully developed during the early centuries of Islam. Arab treatises on the astrolabe were published in the ninth century and indicate a long familiarity with the instrument (the oldest existing instruments are Arabic from the tenth century, and there are nearly 40 instruments from the 11th and 12th centuries). The astrolabe was inherently valuable in Islam because of its ability to determine the astronomically defined prayer times and as an aid in finding the direction to Mecca (the qibla). It must also be noted that astrology was a deeply imbedded element of early Islamic culture and astrology was one of the principle uses of the astrolabe. Many old astrolabes had astrological features that would allow the user to determine horoscopes. Creating a horoscope requires knowledge of the positions of the planets and the ecliptic for a certain date and time. The astrologer interprets the aspects to advise his client. The astrolabe was a convenient way to determine a horoscope because much astrological stress was placed on the position of the ecliptic. Of particular interest were the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon (the ascendant), the ecliptic degree on the western horizon (the descendent) and the ecliptic degree on the meridian (the degree of mid-heaven). In use, the astrolabe is set to the time and date of interest birth, death, coronation, etc. And the ecliptic degrees are read directly. The astrolabe could be used to find the “house” occupied by a planet, but an ephemeris was required to find the planetary coordinates for a date. Provenance: Christies, May, 1987: From a private estate. This is a genuine antique! . Remember – Fake news and fake antiques are fakes! This instrument is guaranteed to be an antique original not a reproduction! Tomlinson:’Instruments of Navigation, London, 1958. Of European Scientific Instruments in the Dept. Of Medieval & Later Antiquities of the British Museum, London. Astrolabes of the World, Robert T. Gunther, The Holland Press. Please look at the pictures and read the description, which form a part of the condition description. Victorian Art Glass Enameled Vase – Webb Moser Mount Washington. This is an absolutely beautiful vase. It has all over enamel flowers, more enamel decoration inside the ruffles of the top rim, and applied handles. The color fades from a dark coral color at the base to almost custard colored at the top. There is some damage on the vase though – one handle has a fairly large sized piece broken off. I included a photo of it. It’s actually not very noticeable since the handle itself is still completely there – the damage part is a decorative piece of glass right under the handle. There is also a very very small chip on the top rim on the outside of one ruffle. It’s barely visible.. I almost missed it when I was checking for damage. The vase measures 8 tall and is not marked that I can find. Photos 30.01-30.05. Any item can be picked up in person in Spring City, TN at our shop. Spring City, TN 37381. Antique AFSHAR Tribal “Masnad” Rug, SE Persian Tribal, south of Kerman, probably Aqta’ or Sirjan area. 3rd quarter of the century, perhaps even earlier? , and coming in rather remarkable condition for its early antique age. The size is approximately: 2′-9″ x 3′-6″ (84 x 107 cm). Within many of the nomadic and tribal rug weaving societies of antiquity, small weaving having the dimensions of this example were woven for personal tent or cottage use and only brought out and displayed for the appearance of tribal elders or special guests of honor, and then placed in storage. In the western rug literature of the past, the field motif was often called the “shield design”, but to the Afshar, it is known as the. Research shows that this element originates from the classical period of Persian floral palmette carpets. This very, very old example of a Afshar “masnad” has weathered the ravages of time and use in rather good condition. The top and bottom endings are original and complete with remnants of the kilim end finishes. The sides are original and complete, but they have been re-wrapped in the past. The pile of weaving was originally clipped down close to make the design crisper to the eye. It still exhibits good, albeit allover low pile, condition retaining exceptional visuals to the observer. On a foundation of cotton warps and mixed wefts of red and blue dyed wool, the weaver used a wide range of harmonious natural dyed wool colors to create her allover infinite repeat design on a “elephant tusk ivory” field background. Because this specimen was made by a pastoral nomadic Afshar woman in her spare time while the clan was on the move seeking greener pastures for their flocks, the tension on her loom varied after each stop and recurrent loom set up causing her rug to be a bit less than 3 inches wider at the top than at the the bottom, hence not a product of a cottage upright loom. I call this inherent weave structure “authentically truly tribal”. A lovely little rug that is really alive and beautiful in person. This small size weaving will. Make a stunningly visual antique Persian tribal textile art wall hanging display in any room of your home or office. If you have any questions about this lovely Afshar rug.
