Rare Antique Early 19th Century Child's Miniature Treen Knitting Sheath Initials
Rare Antique Early 19th Century Child’s Miniature Treen Knitting Sheath, Initialled’M. These sewing tools were found mainly in rural areas in Wales, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Scotland and Northumberland, the majority were made in wood; but other materials included leather, metal, bone, straw and quills. They were used by placing the end of the stick against the right hand hip, tucked into the waistband, or belt, at an angle, so a double ended knitting needle could be placed in the hole, at the opposite end, which was about 1 deep. This secured the knitting needle, and freed the right hand so the knitter could knit at speed, also whilst standing or walking. This charming example is rare in its miniature child size and is engraved with the child’s initials. Condition is good, commensurate with and use. Lovely patina to the wood!

Rare Early Georgian Figured Walnut Lowboy Table, Initials to top, Country House
This is a handsome and well aged antique early Georgian lowboy which dates to the 1700s. It is a modestly sized piece of furniture, not particularly large or heavy, so perfect for a room with limited space. The lowboy has a fantastic amount of character and was found in a rural country house in South Devon. Figured walnut with pine lined drawers the lowboy has a central frieze drawer, shaped apron and flanking deep drawers. It is set on chamfered legs with slightly swept terminals and to the top the initials’B. S. G’ have been carved on the left hand side. The wood has a polished finish and is very well aged. The lowboy is generally in good structural condition having been checked over in our workshop, cosmetically there are many marks of age and use with various patch repairs to the veneer on the table top. There are old inactive woodworm holes to one side panel and one leg has been repaired. The handles are most certainly a later addition and the lock to the central drawer is a later replacement. This piece is well aged and pretty ancient looking, perfect if you love old, well aged furniture. The measurements are taken at the widest points. You are welcome to collect in person or we can arrange a courier. Help may be required to unload. Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. London(usually Mondays and Tuesdays). North as far as Manchester. Please take a glance at our other items, we list new things every week. Our stock is constantly changing and updating and is quite varied and in many cases unique. We are a small family run company based in South Devon and have been restoring furniture for many years after deciding to turn our hobby into a business. We professionally restore antique and vintage pieces, painting some which need updating and preserving those which look handsome left untouched. We use traditional methods such as hand painting and French Polishing and all our paint is water based. We love anything old and antique and take great care in the preparation and repair of all items, treating old woodworm and fixing loose joints as a matter of course.
