1912 Rare Royal Doulton Square Vase Dutch Scene Ethel Beard & Leslie Harradine
1912 Rare Royal Doulton Square Vase Dutch Scene. Ethel Beard & Leslie Harradine. Tube Lined Scene of Dutch’Goose-Girl’ Fully Impressed Inc AH Incised. AH – Ada Tosen, Senior Assistant at Royal Doulton. This a very rare and very valuable Royal Doulton vase of square form, that is then tube lined to create a scene of a Dutch girl rounding up a goose from the lightly wooded field. It is a most attractive vase and the two main panels are highlighted against a classic Doulton blue green glazed ground, a short run of an incredible Arts & Crafts piece, that for every successful vase were several firing failures, as each piece went under several firings to such fine vases. This vase was created at a time when Continental Art Nouveau had a short lived influence before Doulton found their own expression, their own Art Nouveau style. Very few survived the manufacturing process and even fewer survived the 110 years since it went on sale for less than 12 months, before the outbreak of WW1 stopped most manufacturing that was not war effort focussed, or the production staff were not called up to fight or work on supplying the frontline. These amazing pieces of art were designed and produced by Ethel Beard and Leslie Harradine, two of the very great names at Royal Doulton, assisted by one of the Senior Assistants Ada Tosen. Ada worked as an assistant to some of the great early names of Doulton, from about 1880 to about the 1920s. This significant and amazing vase was as a result of such wonderful partnerships being at Doulton, prior to WW1, and this is one of their best pieces in my opinion. The vase is approx. 21.5cms tall, approx. 16cms wide and approx. 10cms deep, being in amazing condition, which is remarkable for a vase of 110 years old, a true and rare antique that is highly collectable. I cannot honestly see any restorations or repairs and the impressed marks on the base are correct. The most wonderful of decorations and it needs a home that can admire and protect it in equal measures. The pictures do not do it justice at all, but are important to show the condition. This item is in the category “Pottery, Ceramics & Glass\Decorative Pottery, Ceramics & Glass\Vases”. The seller is “curiouscatcollectables” and is located in this country: GB. Swimming in the right direction? Extremely Rare Late 17th Early 18th Century Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass!!!! I say amaZingly because it is one of the most advanced designs of compasses for its time that I have come across! The needle is half white steel and half blackened steel, the white portion points North perhaps since Europeans are generally speaking white at that time, while the South is blackened since the south is primarily inhabited by darker folks, regardless the two different colors make it much easier and thus faster to differentiate between North and South, and the shape of the needle makes it much easier to follow even by someone with poor eye sight, extremely intelligent. Most likely created for the Dutch East India or Dutch West India Company, which could not function with-out such devices, the GPS of its time. It is the only compass I have eVer seen with a Z for south (Zuiden), which clearly and definitively indicate the compass is Dutch. The measurements of the wooden case are approximately 10.2 cm x 9.35 cm x 3.55 cm (4″ x 3 10.8/16″ x 1 6.5/16). The brass ring surrounding the compass is approximately 8.75 cm (3 7/16) in diameter. On the brass portion, the decorations, lines, and arabic numerals were all hand engraved by one of the worlds unknown but best compass makers I have eVer encountered. I have seen a Dutch? Compass, I inserted a question mark because the South was an S and not a Z, and of what I deem of much lesser quality fetch a sum of approximately 55 thousand USDs! So price-wise this beauty is a gift! The wooden case box is partially cracked on both sides, the crystal glass has some scratches as can be observed on the upper right quadrant of the second image and the upper left quadrant of the 5th image, and some points of oxidation (darker colored areas), but remains a fully functional and beautiful compass worthy of any museum! A great addition to any museum quality marine or scientific collection! Definitely a gift for any high level intellectual mind! Please feel free to check out my other Museum Quality Collection. For the year of our Lord 2019 I wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Sail Wisely & God Bless.
