Rare Early 18th Century Pewter Antique German Rococo Soup Tureen Dated 1723
Posted by admin On March 22, 2023
From the first quarter of the 18th century a large proportion of German pewter was made in rococo, then neo-classical, followed by Empire styles. The forms most suited to rococo were candlesticks, sauceboats, teapots, coffee pots and tureens. Most of these were of fine quality metal and workmanship, and the rococo style continued until the end of the 18th century, long after it was considered to be fashionable (1725 to 1760). The rococo style was never used by English pewterers; the Dutch and French used it sparingly. Only the Germans experimented with this style to any large degree. The eagle touchmark on this fine soup tureen suggests it comes from Villingen, Federal Republic of Germany. Covered soup tureens in the rococo style such as this, are extremely rare and are coveted by serious pewter collectors. Because they were costly, few were made. As a two piece set, far fewer survived intact for hundreds of years. This fine example is a large soup tureen with vertical lobing, measuring 14 ½ ” in width (from the outer edge of each handle) and 12″ in height. The base opening of the tureen measures 10 ½” by 7 ½”, and is engraved with the owner’s inials “GSK” and the date “1723”. The bottom of the base contains three oval maker’s marks (unidentified), the center mark containing an eagle and the numbers “2 3″. The quality of the metal is exceptional and the soup tureen weighs a full 7 pounds. There is a solder repair, as shown in the photos. This tureen holds a full gallon, and I believe it might be a “presentation piece”, adding greatly to its value. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Metalware\Pewter”. Rare Early 19th Century Woolwork Sampler of a Seated Cat Dated 1831
Posted by admin On December 22, 2019
Images of cats seem to be rarer than those of dogs. This is especially true in early needlework. In this large piece of woolwork, the stitcher created a picture of her striped cat sitting on a red, bun-footed footstool. The green ground around the cat harmonizes well with the elaborate rope-like border stitched in shades of rust, brown, cream and gray. There are two large motifs in leaf shape in the right and left corners of the composition. The cat itself is stitched in finer wool yarn than the background and the border. Part of its face and chest were stitched in a silky-finished floss. The stitcher used a heavy silk floss for her name and date: H. This places this fabulous piece of needlework in the era prior to those that became popular after Victoria took the British throne. It is housed in its original wood and gesso painted frame with a gilded slip and old, bubbled glass. The condition of the woolwork is excellent. There are no holes or staining. The color retention is phenomenal given the age of this embroidery. This must have been a cherished family piece that was kept in a room with few windows that kept the wool from fading. It appears to have been backed with a board at some time that helped keep the needlework free of dust and insects. The attractive frame is in excellent condition as well. I have had it professionally restored to bring it back to its former glory. This is an extraordinary and striking piece of early needlework, and as such, deserves a special place in ones collection. It measures 21-1/2 inches wide and 20-1/2 inches high, including the frame. Personal and cashiers checks also accepted. Expertise in 18th and 19th Century Needlework, British Paintings, and 19th Century Decorative Arts with over 35 Years Experience. Dated 1517 Stained Armorial Glass Window Genuine Swiss Early 16th Century Rare
Posted by admin On October 2, 2019
Very rare original 16th century Swiss stained glass window (not a later 19th century recreation). These silver stained glass lead-light windows often celebrated a wedding and this particular window displays family arms and text caption below in German pertaining to family name’the house of… And dated above and below 1517- incidentally the start of Martin Luther’s Protestant Reformation that year. Excellent original colours that look magnificent in the light. In the photos the panel is angled against a white wall with a small amount of light illuminating from the back. Note, when flat against a wall the panel looks less lively as shown in last photo. Originally would have most likely been inset into a larger plain roundel type window in the family’s home as a centrepiece from what I understand. Measures 485mm x 370mm. Condition is outstanding for age and the lead appears to be original as are all the stained glass panels, there is only one very fine hairline crack to corner of one panel as can be seen in photo 4; part from that I really cannot fault this window. Difficult to find anywhere in the world of this age, quality and condition… Really belongs in a museum! The item “DATED 1517 STAINED ARMORIAL GLASS WINDOW GENUINE SWISS EARLY 16TH CENTURY RARE” is in sale since Sunday, August 25, 2019. This item is in the category “Antiques\Architectural & Garden\Stained Glass Windows”. The seller is “endeavoursilver” and is located in Auckland. This item can be shipped worldwide.
