RARE EARLY c1760 Antique THE BRITISH HOUSEWIFE Book Martha Bradley COOKBOOK
RARE EARLY Antique Book. Presented for your consideration is this ultra rare, early, antique book. The book is titled, The British Housewife: or the Cook, Housekeeper’s and Gardiner’s Companion, and was written by Martha Bradley. It was printed for S. There is no publication date but dates to circa 1760. The text in this book was first published in weekly articles in 1756 but wasn’t published in book form until 1760. Some of the words in the book are also written with phonetic symbols commonly found in English words of the time. For example, “also” is written as “alfo” in the book and “a” is replaced with ae. The 752 page book gives advice on how to cook certain kinds of food, home medicine, housekeeping, how to maintain a garden and orchard, disorders and remedies for farm animals, and how to plan and maintain herbs. The book is basically an all in one manual for how to run a farm, garden and house! There are several recipes throughout the book as well for food as well as home medicines. The recipes are divided into the following categories: pastry, puddings, preserves, pickles, fricassees, ragouts, soups, sauces, jellies, tarts, cakes, creams, custards, candies, dried fruits, sweetmeats, wines, cordials, and distillery. All pages appear to be intact and free of damage, with the exception of some light foxing. Pages are tightly bound. Finished with a leather hardcover with a ribbed spine. This very hard to find book would make an excellent addition to any rare or early book collection! A fun read for anyone interested in homemaking! The front cover has separated from the rest of the book. Some wear is along the cover edges with the most significant wear being on the spine. As previously mentioned there is some light foxing of the pages. Some light staining is on the front and back covers. No rips or tears in the pages. Overall in VERY GOOD condition for its age. EARLY RARE SOMERSET BRASS DIAL PINE LONGCASE CLOCK J BAND, BRIDGWATER c1760
LOVELY OLD ANTIQUE GEORGIAN BRASS DIAL LONGCASE CLOCK. JO Band of Bridgwater – 1760-79 (James Osmond Band). Early engraved brass dial 30 hour longcase clock. In a plain pine country case, lovely golden colour and patina – 81 high. Superb 11.5 square dial with fine spandrels, finely cut original hands, and large date wheel. All in exceptional condition and in good working order keeping excellent time. Chain driven movement striking the hours on a large bell. Ornate ringed pendulum bob. A very rare maker, I have never come across another Band clock. He was in partnership with a James Hine as braziers and ironmongers, in Bridgwater the business dissolving in 1772 when Hine moved to Exeter, and Band continued the business in Bridgwater. At the time Bridgwater was a major centre for brass, bronze and other metal foundries. However Band and Hine continued to advertise a wide range of goods after that date at their warehouse in North St Exeter, including church and other clocks. Excellent clock ready to put in your home.
