An extremely rare porcelain sculpture from the early years of the Royal Dux factory. From the founding of the factory until 1938, 12,000 different models were made. This sculpture, stamped on the bottom with the number 255, is an early Dux Royal sculpture particularly appreciated by collectors. The factory, founded by model-drawer Eduard Eichler, was named “Royal Dux” in 1898. The famous pink triangle with an “E” in the middle appeared for the first time in 1900. The figurine represents a mythical girl from German folklore – Lorele. And if in some Royal Dux figures we notice average quality of a mass market product, this sculpture was clearly made to attract the attention of the most sophisticated connoisseurs. It is with works such as this one that Royal Dux has earned its place among the best porcelain factories in the world. The face of this figurine truly captures the seductive allure of the sorceress of the Lorelei legend. There is a slight, hardly noticeable thickening of the left forearm, but it is possibly due to the manufacturing proceas. No damage, chips or cracks. Even the flowers on the base are in good condition. Weight of the figurine 1200 grams.
Orchestra of street musicians, (Rudolstadt, Germany) – ca 1901 – ca 1920. Height 17.5-18.5 cm. Ernst Bohne first started porcelain decoration in 1848, only installing a kiln for the manufacture of porcelain in 1850. When Ernst died in 1856, his sons, Gustav, Karl and David took over the company as Ernst Bohne & Söhne. By 1883 David was left as sole proprietor, so in turn David’s children continued the dynasty. It has the Blue Crown with N below, a mark used by Bohne & Son in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s on the end of the base. This mark was used by Bohne & Sons for export wares during this period. All the figures in this lot are extremely rare. French horn musician is in very good condition considering his age, and except for a few paint errors like on the capes edge, which is an artist defect. Flute musician is in good to fair condition considering his right flute is broken off and piece missing. And a tiny chip on cape on left lower side. Chelo musician is also in fair condition, his bow is broken off at the right side and piece missing. Early 20th century’s (circa 1920) Chinese export Sterling silver talcum powder bottle/flask, having a plain shaped oval body and a pull off lid with a swivel pierced cover, pierced to dispense the powder. Marked at the base. In very good conditions with minor signs of wear (any marks/lines you can see are just reflections). The bottle has been engraved in one side with initials. Rare Antique African Yaka Mbwoolo Fetish Figure Congo Early to Mid 20th Century. This is an extremely rare African Yaka Mbwoolo Fetish Figure on wood stand that is painted black. It is possible that it is 19th century, but I cannot be sure. What makes this figure so rare is that the fiber and resin and colored earth are in very good condition. Most of the fetish figures that you find do not have the pouch(bonga-magic) with the power ingredients intact. These figures were used among the Yaka tribe of Zaire to support or contain special concoctions or powers. When charged with these ingredients, they become medicines-poisons that “make ill” through an invisible (supernatural) influence – or “make well” by removing this influence. Owned by specific lineages rather than individuals. The man or woman who becomes cured is entitled to become its ritual officer or nganga (‘doctor’). A Rare & Beautiful Early 20th Century Fall Front Bureau made from the very rare and much prized Ocotea Bullata (Stinkwood). This highly sort after and much prized wood by cabinet makers produces a extremely fine and smooth grain. This timber is no longer available commercially and is now a protected tree in South Africa. The evergreen tree which grows up-to 30 meters tall is indigenous to the high forests of South Africa. The beautiful panelled fall front cover lifts to reveal a fitted interior of miniature drawers, pigeon holes and a writing surface. The base fitted with two shaped drawers with brass plate handles and escutcheons. All raised upon cabriole legs with ball and claw feet. Made to wonderful proportions it will stand proud in any room.
