Rare & Large Early 19th Century Stick Back, Hedge Chair Antique Folk Art
A unusually large primitive early 19th century Irish stick back’hedge’ chair, also known as a famine chair. The chair originates from the rural areas where a large part of the population in the 18th and 19th century lived in single-roomed dwellings, demonstrating the widespread rural poverty of the time. Featuring a thick single slab sycamore seat, turned beech front legs and ash arms, sticks and sycamore comb. The chair of wonderful colour and character, is in robust condition for age, with one fascinating period repair of a rear leg having been replaced in chiseled stick form rather than the other three beech turned originals. There are signs of some historic worm activity but the chair is structurally sound. Of particularly unusual, large size. Seat Thickness: 4.3cms. One of the best examples of its kind on the market at present. The item “Rare & Large Early 19th Century Stick Back, Hedge Chair Antique Folk Art” is in sale since Sunday, November 22, 2020.
