SPECTACULAR RARE EARLY 18TH CENTURY DUTCH MARQUETRY. MOON PHASE 2 BELLS 8 DAY WITH ALARM. The hood with caddy top and gilt flaming finial over the break-arch dial, the trunk with floral and foliate fruitwood marquetry and scrolling door with shaped lenticle with gilt bronze ormolu Rococo style mount depicting Chronos amongst C scrolls, raised on a bombe base with claw and ball feet, the brass break-arch dial with moonphase to the top and gilt Rococo style spandrels, the silvered Roman chapter ring with Arabic five minute markers, the gilt matted centred with subsidiary seconds dial and silvered name plate, with a central subsidiary alarm dial. The weight driven movement striking on two bells, with pendulum and two weights and crank winding key… The 13 inch brass dial having a painted moon roller in the arch above a silvered chapter ring engraved with foliate scrolls between the numerals. The matted centre incorporating a subsidiary seconds dial, calendar aperture and alarum, with a plaque inscribed W. Gib Rotterdam, ornamented with gilt spandrels to the corners. The caddy topped hood with shaped cavetto moulding centred by a carved parcel gilt ormolu crest and urn finial, and marquetried with trailing flowers; the dial flanked by gilded integral columns. The trunk having a shaped door with applied edge moulding, a carved scroll crest to the top and a glazed panel framed in a Rococo scrolling ormolu cartouche with decorative figural mount, inlaid with flowers, a bird and a butterfly and flanked by chequer banded canted sides. The marquetried bombe base raised on lion paw feet. 98 ins (250 cms) overall in height. THIS FINE CLOCK IS IN SPECTACULARLY GOOD CONDITION THROUGHOUT. William Gib Senior clockmaker/watchmaker. 2 Blaak, Rotterdam, Holland. William Gib was born in 1673 or 1674, either in Scotland or in England. He was a renowned maker of many good quality longcase clocks, wall clocks, bracket clocks and pocket watches. Around 1700 he was married to Anna Rommilius (also Romelius) in Rotterdam; the couple had 10 children. Between 1709 and 1735 Gib several times held the position of chairman of the St. From 1716 to his death Gib worked at Vissersdijk, Noordblaak in Rotterdam, where he had bought a house. His sons Willem and Pieter also became watch- and clockmakers in Rotterdam. S house was demolished in 1880, with only three memorial stones remaining in the gable of the museum.
