Charles Mielatz Rare Early Florida Etching The Squall, Lake Okeechobee 1915
Posted by admin On November 16, 2022
Rare Early Florida Etching by Charles Mielatz – The Squall, Lake Okeechobee 1915. “The Squall, Lake Okeechobee, Florida” 1915. Etching on cream wove stock. Signed in pencil under the image : Mielatz Imp. Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. Annotated in pencil, by the artist at the lower edge with the title and edition information. (edition of 25 – all states / 5th State – 2nd Impression). A very fine etching by this famous master etcher depicting a storm on the Florida lake near the Everglades. Very dramatic and realistic in feeling, with an impressionist technique. Etchings by this artist usually depict New York, Midwestern and New England scenes and Southern images are rare. This early view of Florida was printed by Mielatz in a total edition of only 25. PLATE SIZE – 5″ x 7″. SHEET SIZE – 7 3/4″ x 9 7/8″. Darkening to the upper corners, well away from the image. Ready to mat and frame. Charles Frederick William Mielatz was born in Bredding, Germany in 1864. He immigrated to the United States as a young boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. Mostly self-taught, his first prints were large New England landscapes reminiscent of the painter-etcher school of American Art. Around 1890 he started to produce prints of New York City and by the time of his death, the number totaled over ninety images. He was a master technician in the field of etching, reworking many of his plates to get the exact feeling he was seeking. It was not unusual for him to have three or more states to a print in an edition run. On some he would simply reduce the plate size, on others, he would remove entire sections of the image to redraw it. He was one of the early pioneers of multi-plate color etchings in this country. Mary Cassatt’s color etchings may have influenced him. Charles Mielatz was a member of the New York Etching Club and elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1906. He succeeded James David Smillie as the etching teacher at the National Academy, a position he held for 15 years. He died in New York City on June 2, 1919. This piece will be a museum quality addition to any collection of American Art and will display beautifully in any decor: Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, Americana, Southern – Florida, Eames Era, Shabby Chic, or Contemporary. Rare Art Nouveau KPM Berlin Porcelain Amberg Asian Lady Figurine Porzellan Figur
Posted by admin On November 15, 2022
A very nice figurine made by KPM in the early 20th century during the original period. Almost impossible to find in white from this period and in perfect condition on top of that! It is an Asian lady (I think Chinese) wearing a flowing robe with a parrot on her left hand. She is standing on a simple yet elegant base. This figurine was part of the crown prince’s wedding procession designed by Adolf Amberg and extremely popular among collectors even today though most one sees are newer models! One can see why – a well modeled figurine that is super elegant and left in the white brings this out even more I think! The figurine is in perfect condition with a brown firing spot on the back of her right shoulder neck interface. She displays perfectly and is 10.25 inches tall, 5.625 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. The figure is marked underneath with the older under glaze blue scepter mark as well as the usual impressed marks one finds on older KPM pieces though I cannot make out this year mark. Could be 1927 or 1931. The scepter has a scratch mark in the glaze denoting a second choice due to the brown spot on her shoulder. Hochzeitszug 20thC German Germany Figure Jugendstil antique. If you like my goodies have a look at my other auctions for a lot more top maker pieces like Vienna, Sevres and so o.
