Rare! Antique 18th C Brass Tinder Box Striker Flint Candle Holder Early Lighting
Posted by admin On July 7, 2023
For sale is a RARE early antique tinder box with its complete assembly of fire starting tools (, a wrought iron striker, a piece of flint rock, and some tinder fiber). The box is made out of brass with a hinged lid and a flat finger loop, very solid and well made. Good old brass patina throughout. The box measures about 3.5″ in diameter and 1.25″ tall. The lid opens and shuts properly with all content inside. The iron striker measures about 2 long. It is in the classical bow form with two nicely curled tails. There are clearly visible early hammering and folding signs. Perfectly darkened iron surface and great antique patina. Along with a flint rock and some old tinder material, this assembly of fire starting tools is an essential early lighting device for colonial American home and pioneer travelers alike. You can see how it is used in the Jeremiah Johnson movie. Please feel free to check out my other antique and collectible listings.

Rare Achille Van de Voorde’Flemish Lace Worker’ Glazed Pottery Figurine c1920
Posted by admin On July 6, 2023
Rare Achille Van de Voorde’Flemish Lace Worker’ Glazed Pottery Figurine c1920. Featuring a female lace worker folk figure in traditional costume working at a bench and glazed in deep blue, cream and treacle colours. One corner of the base of the figurine has been broken and reglued. There is a further chip to the bottom of the base and a manufacturing? Crack to the spindle of the chair. There is also some age-related crazing to the glaze. Otherwise in excellent condition with no other chips or cracks. Please see pictures for more information. Van de Voorde’s pottery was founded in 1913 in Bruges. He graduated as a primus from both the Bruges and Antwerp Art Academy. In Bruges he was taught by Gustaaf Pickery, among others, in whose sculpture studio he worked for a few years. He specialized primarily in the production of figurative pottery and from 1908 he brought glazed pottery figures to the market, baked in the Bruges pottery “Den Uil” by Joseph Van Iseghem. The world wars had a major impact on their company, which unfortunately was closed in the late 1930s at the time of the European unrest in the Second World War. They are known for 114 documented figures with great realism, beautiful sculptures and details, as well as their characteristic deep rich blue glaze. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like further details or pictures. Please see my other items.

Rare Antique Early 19th Century Child’s Miniature Treen Knitting Sheath Initials
Posted by admin On July 4, 2023
Rare Antique Early 19th Century Child’s Miniature Treen Knitting Sheath, Initialled’M. These sewing tools were found mainly in rural areas in Wales, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Scotland and Northumberland, the majority were made in wood; but other materials included leather, metal, bone, straw and quills. They were used by placing the end of the stick against the right hand hip, tucked into the waistband, or belt, at an angle, so a double ended knitting needle could be placed in the hole, at the opposite end, which was about 1 deep. This secured the knitting needle, and freed the right hand so the knitter could knit at speed, also whilst standing or walking. This charming example is rare in its miniature child size and is engraved with the child’s initials. Condition is good, commensurate with and use. Lovely patina to the wood!
