RARE Victorian Early Electric Articulated Swivel-Arm clamp-on lamp. I have done much research, but was not able to conclusively identify the maker of this remarkable lamp. Clearly the design indicates that it dates from the late 19th century, and it was also obviously an electric lamp (an early model) – never a gas lamp – but beyond that I don’t know. Could have been a medical or dental lamp, or perhaps simply for the parlor of an affluent and forward-looking early adopter of electricity. Very well made, with original worn fire-gilt finish and patina intact. Socket was replaced at some point, since the one on it now is a slightly later model (1905-ish, I believe). Comes with a fine ruffled’French-etched’ shade, replete with botanicals and cherubim. Shade has slight roughness at the fitter (typical of the era), and one very small’flea’ bite on the ruffled edge, almost impossible to see and photograph, but I did take a photo of it. Rewired with cotton-jacketed cord, there is approx 5′ of running cord from the clamp end. Please use the close-up feature to fully examine the details and condition of this vintage item. 26 overall full length w/ shade. Clamp will accommodate from 5/8″ to 1 5/8″. We are pleased to be able to offer this. Stunning Extremely Rare Early Victorian Silver & faux TORTOISESHELL Carved Dogs Head Mounted Ladies Purse. I would estimate this rare purse dates to circa 1850 making it nearly 170 years old, this beautiful Victorian purse is crafted in faux Tortoiseshell with curved edges giving it a wonderful tactile feel, the colours are beautiful with rich deep oranges and browns creating such a superb effect, to the front it is mounted with the most beautiful yet unique very special carved dog head image, this is so very rare and has the most amazing detail, from the dogs very life like unusual eyes, his detailed nose and his very beautiful long hair, I would say this must be a female dog as the dog has a lovely bow to the top of her head, I have never seen a carved dog head like this ever, its so very rare, on the other side is a solid silver cartouche, the hinges work well and I believe are a white metal, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a wealthy Victorian Lady and been used on many an occasion, many years ago when things were so very different, this would have been a talking point as it is so unusual and rare, my photos really don’t do it justice, you will not find another like this on the market. Circa 1850, though maybe earlier. 7 cm by 5 cm. The condition for its age is lovely, just one small pin missing, there is no clasp for closing, though it appear there never was a clasp, there is just a little spring back when closed, that being said it doesnt detractat all from its rare beauty, just mentioned for accuracy. Please study the photos as these form an integral part of the description. An unquestionably exquisite and fine addition for any uncompromising collector or as a display piece. A final few words. We welcome customers from the UK and across the globe. We are regularly adding interesting and quality new items and would be really happy if you could. We hope to do business together soon. RARE 3 STEP ANGLEPOISE BY HERBERT TERRY & SONS. Crabtree bakelite bulb holder. Completely untouched, original condition. Fully working, but not currently PAT tested (advisable to get old lamps checked). Rewired with black vintage flex. Earthed at the earthing point on the lower fork. For its age it holds its position well. Tarnishing/rusting to springs, spacer and brackets. Paint loss to the shade, arms and base. Also additional paint splashes to the base (the lamp has been in a workshop for its entire life). The shade yolk is not held in place by the shade bolt (this bolt looks to be a replacement). The interior arm of the shade yolk has been broken and therefore falls a little short of the retaining bolt. This doesn’t affect the function/positioning of the lamp. The inside of the shade has been painted at some point, most of which has worn away. I have left what remains, as I prefer 3 steps to be left in whatever condition they are found. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR FURTHER LAMPS FROM MY COLLECTION. The item “3/THREE STEP ANGLEPOISE 1227 LAMP. RARE COMPLETE EARLY MODEL. BEAUTIFUL RARE EARLY VICTORIAN? BOW STREET RUNNER CROWN TOPPED TIPSTAFF. This is a wonderful Rare Early Victorian maybe Georgian Bow Street Runners Tipstaff, im not to sure on the exact date but im sure the crown to the top would be of help to those who know, i would estimate circa 1800 to 1838 but it may even be 18th century, i just wouldnt know, but it is at least 200 years old, the collar and crown to the top of the wonderful piece of our History has been crafted in Brass and the Handel which has a wonderful slight bow shape. Is i believe crafted in oak. This would have been used many years ago before the invention of the Police Force as we know it today, this would have been used to protect themselves much like a trucheon would be used today, its stunning, it has a nice solid feel to the tipstaff and is not flimsy at all, the brass crown is also solid, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, as you can see it has had much use many many years ago and would have some fascinating stories to tell, the brass is a little mis-shapen maybe were some naughty chap has had a tap to the head, the collar is very bruised with some loss as shown, the the botom of the wooden handle. Just over 6 inche length. The name originates from the early law enforcement officers who would apprehend a person intended for arrest by enforcing their duty, if necessary, by beating them with a tipped staff or stave. The staff was made of wood or metal or both, topped with a crown. Some staffs were definitely a means of protection and this is where the present day policeman’s baton, or truncheon, originates. Examples remain at the Royal Courts of Justice and the Metropolitan Police museum in London and vary depending on the type and rank of officer. These tipstaves were first carried in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Bow Street Runners were the first professional police force, organised in London by magistrate and author Henry Fielding in 1749. The group would end up successfully solving and preventing crimes until 1839 when the force was disbanded in favour of the Metropolitan Police, leaving behind a legacy for modern-day policing. Before the introduction of the Bow Street Runners and anything of the like, policing took the form of privately paid individuals used to maintain law and order without a formal system connected to the state. People who partook in this activity, such as a figure called Charles Huitchen and his accomplice Jonathan Wild, were voluntarily policing the streets of London for big profits when in fact, these men and others like them were often behind much of the crime in the area. The informal, volunteer based system was not working. The resulting impact was a swelling number of private thief-takers operating around London, rather than the intended consequence of incentivising victims to prosecute the person who had carried out the crime. It was clear that the system in place was not functioning as it should, with crime still on the increase and new crimes developing, something new had to be done. The law enforcement in operation in the eighteenth century had changed very little since medieval times. There were JPs, known as Justices of the Peace that had been in existence since 1361, appointed by the Crown but were often known for their corruption. Then there were the watchmen, referred to as Charleys because they were introduced by King Charles II, but had proved to be predominantly ineffective. Henry Fielding, along with his half-brother John who was also a magistrate, founded the Bow Street Runners, a paid police force with the intention of preventing and fighting crime. The force he set up included six paid constables to patrol the streets of London. The name the Bow Street Runners referred simply to their location, whilst the term runners referred to their pursuit of criminals, although it was not a name that was particularly well-received by the constables themselves. The constables were formally trained, paid and full-time serving officers, very different from the more informal, privately funded system which had been operating. Instead the men were paid using a government grant, therefore creating a closer link to a state-run law enforcement system. They were also to receive rewards when they caught their suspects, much like the Thief Takers, only with more formality and control in place. This idea proved to be effective and by 1800, there were said to be around sixty-eight Bow Street Runners fighting crime in London. ” price a BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE 7″ MILLINER’S MODEL DOLL WITH RARE HEAD! A SUPERB EXAMPLE of her type, this wonderful early doll with a PAPER MACHE head in a hard to find mold is a lovely model with distinctive appeal; you will love her ORIGINAL PRESENTATION! A suitable diminutive size for a larger scale DOLLHOUSE or ROOM BOX vignette, we can envision creating an 1840’s parlor or kitchen scene around this fabulous early doll, as she wears a two piece ensemble consisting of a tunic style blouse of a eggplant purple silk moire fabric with black velvet collar, and contrasting long black silk skirt, both appearing original to her! Please note that the purple sheen on the fabric is more aged in front where the material was most likely exposed to light than the back of her top which is a little brighter in color. The doll herself has a beautiful early hand painted PAPER MACHE face and shoulder plate with black sculpted hair, and painted features including greenish-blue eyes, dramatic black arched eyebrows, subtly blushed cheeks and dainty red lips. There is age related wear to the paint on her hair and areas on her face including her nose, but the paint is original to her and did not want to compromise her charming originality by having her features modified in any way! Her MILLINERS MODEL type body consists of a leather torso with beautifully sculpted WOODEN arms and hands with delicately carved fingers, and carved wooden lower limbs with red painted tops and purple boots. Please note that there is a professional touch-up to the painting on her boots and reinforcement to the leather on her body and have shown a picture of her legs depicting an example of the professional work that was done. In our opinion, the minor restoration work done to her and age related paint wear do not detract from her overall CHARMING PRESENTATION, considering the fact she is about 175 years old! Any other doll or accessory items used for display are not included in this offering, unless otherwise specified. THANK YOU for LOOKING and GOOD LUCK!
